Maryland Drive #2

This existing one-story Spanish-style home had become too small for the clients' growing family, and the layout did not work well for entertaining. The new design combines several first-floor rooms to create a large open kitchen/living area with access to the backyard. A new second floor contains a primary suite, two children's bedrooms and baths, laundry, and an office. Guests move easily from the front courtyard, through the first floor's living spaces, and out to a new pool/bar-b-que area in the backyard. The new kitchen/living area becomes a central gathering space for both the family and guests when entertaining. While the home's exterior continues much of the detailing typical of the neighborhood's Spanish architecture, the interior design reflects a more modern, casual sensibility. Rooftop solar panels provide enough electricity for the whole house, and the new garden is designed with drought-tolerant planting.
